Diversity – A Performance Enhancer

In light of the #MeToo movement, there have been debates around how men and women can work respectfully together in the same space whilst not being too heavy handed with restrictive rules to protect workers from harassment. The ideas being discussed include how we should present ourselves, how we should behave, and what constitutes a clear and harmful transgression. On the one hand, it’s a long overdue discussion considering men and women have been working together for tens of thousands of years; on the other, it’s an opportune time for us to finally start figuring out what gender equality in the workplace looks like.

As someone who strongly believes in equality for all, I’m one for diversity and integration. There will always be friction and struggle when bringing different peoples together. However, through continuous collaboration and building mutual understanding we can achieve social harmony and improve social equity. This might sound idealistic, but the other option is segregation and isolation, which has been proven disadvantageous for societies throughout history.

Diversity in workplaces has shown to improve organizational performance when different ideas and values are heard. Imagine what great things can be achieved when we treat each other with respect and work together; when women and men can confidently and safely express themselves without fear of being harassed, intimidated or judged unfairly as a result of their gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. Opening ourselves to the broad spectrums of our diverse nature as human beings will lead to an enriched world.
